Castles
We are known for our many castles here in North Wales built to keep the English out and then used against the Welsh to keep order, the history is fascinating.
Less than 3 miles away in the medieval town of Beaumaris, there stands Beaumaris castle dating back to the 13th century.
We are only a 10-minute walk to Aberlleiniog Castle which was built between 1080 and 1099, it’s a gem in the heart of a peaceful woodland and part of a protected nature reserve.
From Beaumaris town centre you can also take the short walk down to the banks of the Menai Strait with views across to the Carneddau Mountain Range and Snowdonia. This is a lovely stroll with spectacular scenery. A walk I often do.
Whilst you are there take a look at the Gaol, Courthouse, Georgian architecture, seafront and pier plus you can go on a boat touraround puffin island too.
The Famous Coastal Path
We are just a 15-minute walk or 3-minute drive away from the AngleseyCoastal pathit has a total length of 130 miles in all). We are surrounded by footpaths and quiet country lanes for you to explore, without a map, just head out you can’t get that lost, can you?
Heritage
It takes 6 minutes to drive (or a 30 minute walk) to Penmon Priory and Dovecote. The priory is believed to date back to the 6th century can you believe that?
A short walk or drive will take you to the stunning Penmon Point with its Lighthouse and views across the Irish Sea and across towards Puffin Island. I’m sure you have seen this picture postcard image in many scenes depicting Anglesey. You can gaze at the lighthouse whilst partaking in a little refreshment at the cafe there.
Beach Life
Llanddona Beach is only a short drive from Plas yn Llangoed, which is a big large rounded pebbled beach that leads onto a long, flat sandy beach. It’s great fun if you have toddlers.
Golf Course
18 holes of great Golf just 5 minutes away at Henllys Hall with views across to the Great Orme. Or a smaller version with just 9 Holes in Beaumaris at Baron Hill with equally amazing views.
Outdoor activity
Plas Menai is a National Outdoor Centre and a place you can hire instructors or sign up for courses. It’s less than a 30 minute drive away, offers many outdoor activities for families and individuals from taster activities and youth courses to specialist courses there are way too many things to list here so do check them out. If you like the outdoors this is where you start.
By Bike
We are lucky enough to be surrounded by quiet country lanes to explore on bicycle, or if you fancy something more challenging you can drive into Snowdonia across the Menai Strait, where you will be spoilt with some of the best cycling in the country for both road bikes and mountain bikes.
Watersport’s
Anglesey really is a great place for watersports and there are so many things to do. Windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, open water swimming, coasteering or a rib ride, to name but a few! If you’re going to try one thing then my advice is to take a RibRide on the Menai Strait. It’s a great way to see the coast and wildlife and I might be driving the boat if you’re lucky! I am also fond of the guys over inPsyched Paddle boarding too, they do guided night paddles, which is a bit different.
I can’t write a recommendation about what to do when you are camping with us without talking about Zip World could I? It’s great fun, an amazing experience and very well run. It will only take you 30 minutes to get there from the campsite too.
Also check out a place called Bounce Below the trampoline park, as they call it, underground in the old slate mines, and the mountain bike centre both in Blaenu Ffestiniog or the Forest Rollercoaster that’s great fun if you have little ones.
The list is endless and these are just my ideas of where to go. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy it to the max!
Big Love….
